" Tiny
" 0-4-0 Broad Gauge engine.
(This engine is
under construction and will be made of scrap materials in S7 mm
.)

Little "Tiny" at work in the yards of Kingswear. This little engine is very usefull to shunt the wagons which have to be loaded or unloaded. She has to pull one or two wagons in the yards. photo 18/08/2002 cdj © |

This picture let see the
almost finished state of "Tiny". After cleaning
we shall paint the small engine in the correct colours.
So far we know what these colours are. A lot of small
details are mounted at the boiler and de vertical steam
engine. Most of these parts are made bij hand sometimes
using a magnifier. After painting the engine the motor
will be replaced and her first trip can happen at the
finished parts of the model railway. One of the axles is
sprung so we get a good contact with the tracks. For more details of the real Tiny click here. |

The details at the top of
the boiler and the vertical steamengine. Al those parts
are made by hand with a lot of patience. We only need to
make a steam presure gauge and a small pipe from the
valve at the bottom to the top op the boiler. |

Tiny is placed at one of the BG tracks at the station Kingswear. The woodwork of the canopy is not yet finished but is getting shape. At this picture you can see already one of the triangles for moving the steam valves. The second picture shows Tiny in front of a convertible brakevan. photo's 31/03/2002 cdj ©

The parts needed to move
the steamvalves are mounted complete at the axle of the
steam engine. These parts are very small and fragiel.
When the motor is turning a little rubber band moves the
axle of the steam engine. Two toothwheels are turning
then the axle with the wheels. The finishing of the model
can start now. |

For the propelling of the
crankaxle we use a rubber band because there no room for
gears. The axles with the white nylon poulies are
adjustable so we can regulate the tension of the rubber
band. One of the axles is coupled to the crankaxle by the
gear at the rightsite. The other axle willbe moved by the
coupling rods. This axle is sprung with two small
coilsprings. |

simplicity and beauty of this very small Broad Gauge
engine. |

Here the
parts needed to construct the 0-4-0 Broad Gauge engine
"Tiny".The parts are made by the builder of the
engine. The little motor is a part from a creditcard
reader made by Faulhaber. The small gearbox is an
intergrated part of the motor. |

These parts are the parts
for the motion the steam valves. They are very small and
constructed from diverend pieces of brass. With solder
and a lot of patience we constructed the parts as seen on
the picture. |

A complete set of the
steam valve motion. This part consists of 10 small parts.
With a lot of patience the part is assembled together.
The parts are hand made from diverend materials. At the
first picture at the top of this page you can see such a
part mounted at the engine. There are two of this parts at
the engine when it's finished. |

When a modeldriver is
standing on the engine you can see how small it is. When
the springs are mounted the engine will be higher above
rail level. The little man is not correct for the periode
but give an impression of the dimensions of

South Devon Railway 0-4-0 vertical boilered Tiny, the only original broad-gauge locomotive to survive to the present day, at it was in 1899 doing duty as a stationary water pumping engine at Newton Abbot locomotive works.. It is now preserved and stands as a memorial to the broad gauge on the station platform there, being destined ultimately for Swindon Museum. In it's early days this engine worked the Sutton branch, then in Newton Abbot yard and later at Millbay docks. |
